What Happens During a Hypnotherapy Session?

One of the most common questions people ask before booking a hypnotherapy session is:

"What actually happens during hypnosis?"

As a therapist since 2018, I hear this question almost every week.

Many people are curious but also a little nervous.

They wonder whether they will lose control, reveal secrets, fall asleep, or somehow be manipulated.

The reality is much simpler and much more comfortable than most people imagine.

First, Let's Clear Up A Few Myths

Before discussing what happens during a hypnotherapy session, let's address some common misconceptions.

Myth #1: I'll Lose Control

You remain aware and in control throughout the entire session.

You cannot be made to do anything against your values or wishes.

Myth #2: I'll Be Asleep

Hypnosis is not sleep.

Most people describe it as feeling deeply relaxed while remaining aware of everything that is happening.

Myth #3: I'll Reveal Secrets

No.

You choose what you share and what you keep private.

You remain fully capable of speaking, thinking, and making decisions throughout the session.

Myth #4: Only Weak-Minded People Can Be Hypnotized

The opposite is often true.

People with strong focus, imagination, and concentration tend to do very well with hypnosis.

What Is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention.

In fact, you have probably experienced it many times already.

Examples include:

• Becoming completely absorbed in a movie.
• Daydreaming while driving.
• Losing track of time while reading a book.
• Becoming deeply focused on a task.

Hypnosis simply uses this natural state intentionally to create positive change.

Before The Session Begins

The session usually starts with a conversation.

We discuss:

• What you would like to change.
• Your goals.
• Your challenges.
• Relevant life experiences.
• What success would look like for you.

This helps create a clear direction for the session.

Whether you are struggling with anxiety, confidence, emotional eating, weight loss, self-sabotage, fear of flying, smoking, or another challenge, understanding the problem is an important first step.

Entering Hypnosis

Once the session begins, you will be guided into a relaxed state.

Most people notice:

• Relaxed muscles.
• Slower breathing.
• A calmer mind.
• Reduced mental chatter.
• A sense of comfort and safety.

Some people feel very relaxed.

Others feel surprisingly alert.

Both experiences are completely normal.

Exploring The Subconscious Mind

Many of our behaviors, habits, emotional responses, and beliefs operate automatically.

This is because they are driven by the subconscious mind.

During hypnosis, it becomes easier to access these deeper patterns.

Depending on the issue, we may explore:

• Limiting beliefs.
• Emotional triggers.
• Past experiences.
• Self-sabotaging patterns.
• The meaning your mind attached to certain events.

Often people discover that current challenges began much earlier than they realized.

For example:

A fear of rejection may contribute to anxiety.

A need for comfort may contribute to emotional eating.

A childhood experience may contribute to low confidence.

Understanding the root often creates powerful insight.

Creating New Patterns

Awareness alone is helpful.

Transformation happens when new patterns are created.

This is where the change work begins.

Using therapeutic techniques, hypnosis, and subconscious reprogramming, we help replace outdated beliefs with healthier alternatives.

For example:

Instead of:

• I am not good enough.

You may begin developing:

• I am capable and worthy.

Instead of:

• I always fail.

You may begin developing:

• I learn, grow, and improve every day.

When beliefs change, behavior often changes naturally.

Your Personalized Recording

One of the most important parts of my work is the personalized recording created specifically for you.

This recording is designed around your goals, challenges, and the insights uncovered during your session.

By listening regularly, new beliefs and patterns become stronger and more automatic.

Many clients tell me this becomes one of the most valuable parts of the process because the transformation continues long after the session has ended.

What Does Hypnosis Feel Like?

Everyone experiences hypnosis slightly differently.

Common descriptions include:

• Deep relaxation.
• Feeling calm and peaceful.
• Feeling focused.
• Feeling lighter.
• Feeling as though time passed quickly.

Many people are surprised by how normal the experience feels.

What Can Hypnotherapy Help With?

Hypnotherapy may help support positive change in areas such as:

• Anxiety.
• Confidence.
• Self-esteem.
• Weight loss.
• Emotional eating.
• Stress.
• Fear of flying.
• Smoking cessation.
• Motivation.
• Public speaking.
• Self-sabotage.
• Limiting beliefs.

Why My Approach Is Different

Many people spend years trying to force themselves to change.

They know what they should do.

They know what they should stop doing.

Yet they continue repeating the same patterns.

This is because the subconscious mind is often running the show.

My approach combines Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT), hypnosis, subconscious reprogramming, and practical transformation tools to help uncover and transform the beliefs that may be keeping people stuck.

Rather than focusing only on symptoms, we work to understand the root cause.

Whether someone is struggling with anxiety, emotional eating, low confidence, fears, self-sabotage, or unhealthy habits, there is usually a reason those patterns developed.

Once the root cause is understood, meaningful change often becomes much easier.

My goal is not simply to help people cope.

My goal is to help them create lasting change.

What Clients Are Often Surprised To Discover

Many people come to a session expecting hypnosis to feel mysterious or unusual.

Instead, they are often surprised by how natural it feels.

They discover that hypnosis is not about losing control.

It is about understanding themselves more deeply.

They begin to see the beliefs, emotions, and patterns that have been influencing their lives and gain the opportunity to create something different.

For many clients, this becomes the moment things finally start to make sense.
